Different types of yarns in a machine made carpets

There are three main types of yarns which are used in machine made carpets and rugs. Pile yarn and weft yarn and warp yarn. The quality of each one of them can be directly effective in the quality of produced carpet. When we need to consider technical details of machine made carpets and rugs, we conclude that there are three main types of yarn in machine made carpets. To find out the role of each one in a machine made carpet, first we need to realize what type of weft, warp and pile yarn is available.

Pile yarn is exactly what we see on the surface of the carpet and we can touch it. The color of the pile yarn can be seen on the carpet and surely the quality of the pile yarn is really effective in the general quality of the carpet. There are different types of pile yarn which are used to produce different types of carpets.

The next effective yarn is warp yarn which can be in different types, exactly like weft yarn. These two yarns can’t be seen because they are inside carpets but their quality and weight can be effective on the quality of finished products. Experienced carpet and rug producers always try to do various tests on weft and warp yarns before using them in production process.

These days in Iranian carpets and rugs, cotton-polyester is the main weft and warp yarn and also acrylic is the main pile yarn.

Pile yarns

Acrylic Carpet

The best quality yarn available in the weaving of machine woven carpets is acrylic yarn and has the highest quality and price among Persian carpets except Silk carpet. Acrylic yarn is a type of synthetic fiber that can be said to be somewhat similar to natural wool fibers in some properties such as softness and flexibility; Hence, some call these fibers synthetic wool.

Those who are looking to buy a good quality home carpet and think about its durability and longevity, should definitely choose acrylic carpets that will not need to be replaced for many years; In the following, we will see the features of acrylic carpet :

Pros & cons of acrylic carpet

As we have said, carpets with acrylic yarns have the highest price, but this does not mean that they are flawless;

Advantages of acrylic carpet:

– The machine-made carpet with acrylic yarn is softer and finer than other yarns such as polyester (Softness and flexibility).

– If we touch the surface of the acrylic carpet, the yarns pass in the form of grains and are not spun together.

– Acrylic yarn has a very high traffic resistance (reversibility) and returns to its original state (Do not pound over time)

– Acrylic carpet is light and transparent in terms of color, but polyester carpets are glossy and the colors look a little different when you look at the carpet from different angles.

– Acrylic carpet does not smell of petroleum products or plastic.

– Acrylic carpets have good resistance to heat, while polyester carpets are not resistant to heat and their fibers are lost (Higher durability against hot objects).

Disadvantages of acrylic carpets:

– Primary lint

– Vulnerability to high moisture

– Vulnerability to dust

Also, the yarn has a high resistance to the environmental factors such as light and indirect heat and the color stability in this type of yarn is much higher than others such as polyester and polypropylene. The carpets weave with acrylic yarn have more vivid colors and will not have the effect of pile flattening and hardening in the long run.

Polyester carpet

Because these types of carpets do not have lint and have a lower price, they are very popular. Polyester carpets, which are made of synthetic fibers, are usually completely crushed over time by moving on them, which means that they will not have any softness.

Note that since polyester carpets are usually woven with low reeds and points, they are limited in design and color.

Pros and cons of polyester carpet

Advantages of polyester carpet

– No lint

– Relatively cheap price

Disadvantages of polyester carpets:

– Vulnerability to hot objects

– Beaten (pounded) over time

– Lack of softness and flexibility

– Less durability and stability

BCF carpet

BCF yarn is the cheapest yarn in carpet weaving. BCF carpets are low quality than others, and usually woven with very low number of reeds, such as 440 reeds or less, and are produced as light carpets, mostly for export to low level countries. Certainly, we do not recommend a home carpet made of BCF yarn to that person who is interested to high quality carpet due to its very short life and lack of proper quality.

Virgin carpet

virgin yarn is a synthetic fiber with properties similar to acrylic but internal properties quite similar to polyester. Since this type of yarn is cheaper than acrylic, it has been heard that some profiteers sell the virgin carpet under the name of acrylic carpet, which confuses buyers a bit. It must be said that it is almost impossible to distinguish the virgin yarn from acrylic yarn, and you must send a sample to a textile laboratory to determine its exact material.

Silk Carpet (Modal)

Silk machine made carpet

Silk machine made carpet has always been one of the most special carpets and has had many fans since ancient times. Bamboo silk is the hottest new trend in rug fibres. Bamboo silk is simply the name given to a carpet made from bamboo stalks. As a fibre, Bamboo is growing in popularity due to it being a fantastic renewable resource.

Pros and cons of silk carpet

Advantages of machine made Silk carpet

– Artificial silk carpet has a very shiny, soft, delicate and attractive appearance that none of the other carpets have this unique feature.

– These carpets are lint-free and do not have any fluff and are suitable for respiratory and allergic patients.

– It is easy to wash and sweep because they have a low pile height.

– The back of this carpet is in such a way that it does not slide on the ceramic.

– Anti-static electricity.

– It has color stability and resistance to sunlight.

Disadvantages of machine silk carpet

– Silk carpet is one of the most expensive types of carpets.

– Silk carpets are not very thick because the height of the pile thread is small, and for this reason, if the base of a sofa or a table is placed on it for a long time, there will be a dent in it.

– Silk fibers are soft and delicate. In the weaving and production of silk carpets, fibers that are rigid are not used at all. So; Silk carpets are delicate and thin, and it is better to use them for wall frames and areas with less traffic. – Silk carpets may be vulnerable in some situations.
